Gazprom-Media Holding
CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko took part in a panel session at the St. Petersburg
International Economic Forum (SPIEF). The discussion panel was devoted to the
topic “Developing the market for the legal consumption of audio and video
content.” Other panel participants included the head of the Federal Service for
Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media
(Roskomnadzor) Alexander Zharov, president of the Media-Communications Union
Pavel Stepanov, as well as the heads of Russian media companies and the
representatives of foreign players on the media market.
Speaking at the session, Dmitry Chernyshenko talked about how the consumption of content will change in various media environments, and the protection of intellectual property in the digital sphere.
Dmitry Chernyshenko noted that up to 2021 TV will remain the dominant platform in media consumption: TV will account for 44% of the media consumption time. The share of Internet will reach 19%. By 2021, a person will spend an average 10 hours per day on the consumption of entertainment content.
“Professional television content remains beyond competition, moreover, investments into its production are growing. In terms of coverage, quality and depth of viewing, content that is created for other platforms cannot compete with that of television,” Dmitry Chernyshenko said.
He remarked that in 2016 Gazprom-Media television channels released 26,000 hours of broadcast products of their own making and that 100% of the television projects are available to view online. Thus, the issue of protecting content from illegal distribution is key for the holding, Chernyshenko stressed.
“In this sense, the role of Roskomnadzor is very important. The current policy of the regulator is an example of a balanced approach in protecting both the market and the rights holders,” said Dmitry Chernyshenko. He also noted that it is very important that the measures for the protection of content work effectively before the cinematic releases of such large-scale projects as the films Gogol.Nachalo (Gogol. The Beginning) and Legenda o Kolovrate (Legend of Kolovrat).
